The Wake Forest University Peer Education program is a collaborative initiative within the Campus Life Division. The Peer Groups are advised and trained by partnering offices of the Office of Wellbeing, Learning Assistance Center, University Counseling Center, and Wake Forest Dining.
Alcohol and Other Drug Misuse Prevention – Peter Rives, Assistant Director of Wellbeing – Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention, Office of Wellbeing
Peter Rives (WFU ’98) joined the Office of Wellbeing at his alma mater in 2016 after a 16 year career in public and community-based mental health, substance use, intellectual and developmental disabilities and integrated healthcare services. He is charged with leading the development, implementation and evaluation of programs to prevent and respond to problematic alcohol and drug use at Wake Forest.

Kate is the Nutrition Director and Sports Dietitian with Wake Forest University Dining. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and Chemistry from Queens University as well as a Master’s Degree in Nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Kate is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as well as the Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness and Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Associations. She is Board Certified in Sports Dietetics.
Kate works closely with our culinary and management staff to ensure there is a variety of nutrient-dense choices available across our campus each day. Nutrition is a key element in overall wellbeing, and nourishing our campus community is a priority for Wake Forest Dining Services. From plant-forward offerings to special needs diets and performance dining, Kate is available to provide guidance and oversight to ensure our campus is a safe comfortable place to eat well every day. Kate is also involved with Student Health Services, Campus Life, Athletics, Thrive, and other organizations to provide individual, group and team nutrition counseling, guest lectures and a variety of wellness programs.
Student Education and Empowerment for Invisible Disabilities – Michael P. Shuman, Ph.D., Director of Learning Assistance Center & Disability Services
Michael joined the LAC staff in 1997. He received a BA in French and Music from Furman University; an MEd in Higher Education Administration from the University of South Carolina; and a PhD in Higher Education Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In addition to providing academic counseling to WFU students, he specializes in the needs of students with physical, visual, and hearing impairments. Also, Michael provides ADHD coaching and coordinates LAC’s assistive technology and peer tutoring programs.
“As the adviser for the Invisible Disabilities group, I hope to work with students who are motivated and committed to bringing attention and awareness to invisible disabilities among WFU students and beyond. According to the US Census Bureau, nearly 1 in 5 of the US population has a disability, and most of them are invisible. Invisible disabilities like chronic health conditions, learning disabilities, and ADHD impact so many WFU students, so I’m thrilled to work with students who are dedicated to providing support, promoting awareness, and encouraging education about this important health issue.” – Michael
Student Mental Health Ambassadors – Denisha Champion, Ph. D., Assistant Director for Programming and Prevention, University Counseling Center
Denisha serves as the Assistant Director for Programming and Prevention in the University Counseling Center where her role is to implement programs and initiatives promoting the overall mental health and emotional wellbeing for Reynolda campus. Denisha is excited to implement the Mental Health Ambassadors program to invite students with ideas and energy around promoting positive mental health on campus.

Program Advisor for the WFU P.E.E.R.S. Program – Brianna Holland, MPH, Program Coordinator, Office of Wellbeing
Brianna is the Project Coordinator for the Office of Wellbeing at Wake Forest University. Brianna has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Spelman College. She continued her studies and completed a Master’s of Public Health, with a concentration in Health Behavior and Health Education, at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (Go Blue!). In her current capacity at Wake Forest, Brianna coordinates the delivery of quality health promotion programs, she works to establish and promote program standards, set objectives and goals, and develops evaluation plans to better attend to the student’s overall efforts to THRIVE! Brianna’s public health mission as a practitioner is to provide awareness, support, and action to communities.
